Your current or future Electronic Medical Record (EMR) productivity software integrates into every aspect of running your Long-Term Care or Home Care facility. You would not rush the care of your patients. Likewise, you should not rush the process of evaluating and selecting the EMR software that best fits your facility needs. While the evaluation phase can be difficult, the the following criteria will help navigate how to choose the right EMR software for your facility:

Integration

You do not want to cut corners on integration. An EMR software has the capabilities of integrating your facility with every key stakeholder — internally and externally — and every aspect of effectively running your organization. Many EMR platforms were built to manage only a few narrow processes, such as patient intake, with additional modules built later to increase capabilities. While this form of solution-building may tick the boxes on your wish list, there may be elements of each module that run as independent applications and cannot truly be integrated. For example, your TeleHealth and Family Communication capabilities shouldn’t simply be add-ons.

In your diligence stage, we recommend you check to see what that integration looks like. Is it a series of patches and workarounds that could lead to delays and complications down the road? Your investigation of the right EMR solution should lead you towards a comprehensive suite of fully integrated modules working together in a single application. Everything in AccessEMR Nursing Home and AccessEMR Home Care works together as seamlessly as your facility’s team of care providers.

Cost vs Benefit

The monthly and onboarding costs for various EMR software solutions may vary immensely. Some have attractive entry-level pricing with rates increasing as you add solutions and capabilities. Others have all the capabilities your facility could ever need and a price tag to match. The options are extensive, and it may seem difficult to determine which EMR application is best for your team. We recommend you concentrate on the capabilities your team needs and your budget — not just the software costs but onboarding, training, and maintenance/support costs. Keep in mind, this is a tool that should make your facility run more effectively and efficiently.

We mentioned previously that you should avoid non-integrated solutions. However, modular EMR solutions like AccessEMR solve for integration and customization simultaneously. What aspects of your facility are crucial for you to streamline? Make sure you find a solution that meets that at the very minimum. If other bells and whistles are available as a value-add without adding significant cost to the purchase, then that is a bonus. Typically, modular EMR solutions allow you to grow into the right solution over time.

Maintenance and Support

Most EMR applications today are cloud-based, with no local installations needed. However, unforeseen issues may arise from time to time. There will still be a need for constant training for new modules and new staff. Ensure the company you opt with offers full technical support for your EMR. It should not merely be present but also easy to access and readily available.

Informatics

Your staff are trained experts in providing care for your patients, so it is safe to say they are not also informatics specialists. The EMR software you choose should assist your team in predicting outcomes and providing a better, safer environment for your patients. It should assist you with building trend reports so you can make better business and clinical decisions. Your criteria should include pre-built trend reporting templates and easy-to-use customization for specific reports you need. When you are attending demo presentations, ensure you see this for yourself.

In Canada, November is Osteoporosis Awareness month. Its focus is to bring awareness, education, and inspiring behavioural change in the critical importance of good bone health and osteoporosis prevention. As common as it may be, osteoporosis is not a normal part of aging and can be prevented. The purpose of today’s blog is to bring more attention to the issue and provide information to our readers on how you can reduce the risk of you or your loved ones from getting this life-altering bone disease.

What is osteoporosis?

In its most literal sense, the osteoporosis means “porous bones” and is a disease that causes a loss of bone density. When a person has osteoporosis, mild stresses such as coughing or bending over can cause these porous bones to fracture with life-threatening outcomes. At least 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will break a bone due to osteoporosis in their lifetime. As many as 28% of women and 37% of men who suffer from a hip fracture will die within the following year. With approximately 2 million Canadians suffering from osteoporosis, fractures caused by the disease are more common than heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer combined. Osteoporosis also has an impact on the quality of life of those affected, including a life-altering loss of mobility, a loss of independence, lower self-esteem, and pain and suffering. While the bone disease is most prevalent among those ages 50 years or older, it can affect people of any age.

What are some of the risk factors?

Low calcium intake
Having a diet low in calcium and vitamin D, especially during a child’s development to 20 years of age, increases the risk of osteoporosis later. Each person has a “bone bank” account in which they can “deposit” and “withdraw” bone tissue from. After the age of 20, bone “withdrawals” begin to exceed “deposits.” Therefore, you are more likely to develop osteoporosis if you did not reach your peak bone mass during your bone development years.

Age
During childhood and teenage years, new bone mass is developed faster than old bone mass is lost. This results in heavier, denser, and larger bones. However, just as we mentioned in the above paragraph, bone formation begins to slow until we reach the peak of our bone mass. At this point, the human body will lose bone mass faster than it can develop.

Sex
It is a known fact that women are more prone to osteoporosis than men because women tend to have smaller, thinner bones. In addition, estrogen, the primary female sex hormone, also protects a woman’s bones. When women reach menopause, estrogen levels decrease sharply, compounding the risk of developing osteoporosis in women.

Sedentary lifestyle
Load-bearing physical activities develop strong bones and promotes balance and good posture, all of which are beneficial to your bones and reduces the risk of falling. People who spend a lot of time sitting have a higher risk of osteoporosis than those that are more active.

Tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption
While the precise role that tobacco plays in osteoporosis remains unclear, it has been shown that tobacco use contributes to weaker bones. For alcohol, drinking on occasion will not have long-term effects on your bones; however, regular consumption of more than two alcoholic drinks a day can increase your risk of osteoporosis.

How can I prevent osteoporosis?

While there are some factors that play in how much of a risk your body is to osteoporosis such as race, gender, and age, you have a direct influence in these factors:

Nutrition
Calcium is essential to proper bone health. Men and women between the ages of 18 and 50 require 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day. This amount increases to 1,200 milligrams for women at the age of 50 and men at the age of 70. Vitamin D is also vital to maintaining a healthy bone density to increase absorption of calcium in the body. Healthy adult between the ages of 19 and 50, require 400-1,000 IU (international units) of Vitamin D daily. If you are over the age of 50, or are a younger adult at high risk, daily intake should be between 800-2,000 IU daily through food or supplements.

Consider the bioavailability of the food and calcium supplements you consume as well. Bioavailability refers to how much calcium is available to the body and how much of it can be absorbed by the body. It is important to consider how well it can be absorbed, too. For example, vegetables such as spinach and rhubarb contain calcium, but may also contain oxalates that bind with it. In these cases, the calcium would then be unavailable for absorption and cannot be considered good sources of calcium.

If you are on calcium supplements to increase your daily intake such as calcium carbonate or calcium citrate, consider taking them with a meal as they are not as easily absorbed into the body on an empty stomach.

Lifestyle
When bones are not being used for exercise, it tells that body that it no longer requires the bone mass it once did. This results in weaker, thinner bones and increases the risk of fractures. Apart from losing muscle mass, this is the same reason why it is vital for astronauts working in microgravity to exercise daily. Maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle can slow bone loss and reduce the chances of osteoporosis.

If you are over the age of 50, consider low impact exercises such as Tai Chi. Research has shown that Tai Chi improves body strength, balance, and mobility without the added risks of other high impact exercises. In addition to being a highly accessible and affordable activity, Tai Chi is considered to be a safe form of exercise for people with low bone density.

Conclusion

What was thought to be part of aging for everyone, osteoporosis studies have shown that this disease can be prevented by maintaining an active lifestyle and smart eating habits. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it more difficult to exercise for everyone, especially in long-term health care facilities where residents are at higher risk than the rest of the population. In order to maximize the protection and safety of those living in these homes, strict protocols must be enforced. This includes self-isolating in their respective rooms for several weeks, increasing stress levels and the need to socialize with their families.

Access eHealth Technologies software, AccessEMR, alleviates two of these pain points. First, families can reconnect with their loved ones once again using our virtual video conferencing solutions. Secondly, physiotherapists can schedule activities remotely and provide guided exercises for residents to follow. Finally, AccessEMR is equipped with trend analysis tools to predict potential falls within the facility. For more information, please read our family communications blog.

AccessEMR will provide better solutions for nursing homes and home care facilities so they can allocate more of their efforts on what is most important: Providing better quality of care to their patients. Book a demo with us today to learn more about our product features and how we aim to improve long-term care facilities across the North America.

As digital health technology becomes more streamlined and easier to use, Canadians are finding it to be their preferred method of accessing their health records. Canadians can securely view their personal health information online, connect to their family doctors, set up a virtual consultation, or even receive electronic prescriptions (e-prescriptions). While this benefits patients across the country, it also streamlines the workflow for care providers.

We cover more information on how digital health has transformed our medical system in our blogs here.

However, the transition has created some difficulty and concerns about what digital health means for both Canadians and care providers. Some of these concerns are not necessarily based on facts. Here are 14 digital health myths debunked.

The following information was sourced from Canada Health Infoway.

1. Online mental health support is impersonal and ineffective, so Canadians aren’t interested in using it.

In 2019, a study done by Canada Health Infoway found that more than half of Canadians were interested in using electronic tools to support their mental health. Regardless of age, income, education level, and culture, mental health can affect everyone. Digital health solutions reduce stigma and make it easier to receive mental health support. Both children and adults can find resources online from their respective provinces to help improve their mental wellbeing.

2. Canadians do not have online access to their health information.

As of 2019, most Canadians can access their personal health information by electronic means. Provincial portals are set up for many citizens in Ontario and British Columbia and all citizens in Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan have access to their health information.

3. Canadians are not comfortable with their health information being shared electronically between doctors and other health care professionals that care for them.

A study done by Canada Health Infoway in 2017 found that 85% of Canadians agree that doctors and other health care professionals require timely and easy access to patients’ health information so they can provide high-quality care.

4. I will not understand my lab results if I access them online because they are too complicated.

It was found that 76% of Canadian patients were confident that they understood their lab results in a study done in 2015.

5. The quality of care offered in a virtual visit is not as good as the care in a face-to-face visit.

While there are several cases that can only be completed through in-person visits, other occasions can be accomplished through virtual visits. This not only reduces the workload on care providers but simplifies the process for patients. In a BC study, 79% of patients who had a virtual visit felt that the quality of care was the same as an in-person visit. Furthermore, 91% of patients said that their online visit helped with the health issue they originally scheduled the appointment for.

6. Digital health will marginalize populations who may not have online access.

Canada is one of the most connected countries in the world. The Government of Canada states that 90% of Canadians today have access to the Internet through one form or another and that will continue to improve. The 2019 federal budget states that by 2026, 95% of Canadian homes and businesses will have access to internet download speeds of at least 50 mbps and upload speeds of 10 mbps. By 2030, no matter where you are in the country, 100% of citizens will have fast and reliable Internet access.

Connection to the Internet simply is not a barrier for most Canadians. Physical access to a medical facility, on the other hand, is a known barrier. Digital health resources reduce this barrier.

7. Digital health is only for the young and tech savvy.

It was found that 90% of Canadian households—including elderly citizen homes—have access to the Internet. Additionally, 74% of Canadians over the ages of 55 years own a smartphone or tablet.

An Internet connection and device capable of accessing the Internet is all a person needs to access digital health services and resources. There are also programs available for seniors to teach them how to use tools like Telehealth services.

8. If patients are able to view lab test results online before talking to their doctors, they will be overly anxious.

In the same study answering Myth #4, it was also reported that there is no significance increase in a patient’s level of anxiety upon receiving their laboratory test results.

9. Doctors will be flooded with calls if patients have access to their results online.

When patients have access to their lab results online, it is in fact the opposite. Patients who have access to their lab results through an online portal are less likely to call their physicians to request additional information.

10. Patients do not want to see their health information and will not find the information useful.

As many as 79% of Canadians say they can access or would like access to their health information online. Those that do have access find it beneficial. 94% of patients that currently use a portal to access their information said they valued viewing their health information online and 74% say it helps them have more informed discussions with their doctor.

11. Digital health is just for health care providers.

While digital health solutions are a boon to health care providers by saving them time and reducing redundancies in their workflow, providing timely access to patients’ health information creates empowerment and engagement which is linked to improved chronic disease management. In addition, patients who have access to their health information are less likely to use urgent or after-hour services.

12. There has been little-to-no progress in digital health in Canada.

The number of family physicians using electronic medical records (EMRs) jumped from 39% in 2009 to 86% in 2017 and continues to grow today. Additionally, it is estimated that 330,000 health care professionals use connected health information systems across the country. The number of Canadians accessing their health records has risen from 2 in 10 Canadians in 2015 to 7 in 10 Canadians in 2019.

13. The government and insurance companies will be able to see my digital health records.

Every province and territory have laws set in place to protect the privacy and confidentiality of your personal health information. As such, governments of all levels and insurances companies do not have access to identifiable information in your digital health records. The only exception of when identifiable information is disclosed is when it is used for lawful purposes or when you have provided consent.

14. I don’t have a right to access my health record.

As a Canadian, you have a right to access your health record. You can make a formal request to access your health records through your health record trustee. A health record trustee is responsible for proper use and management of your records and, in most cases, this would be your health care provider.

There are also other ways to access your health records online. As mentioned in the above myths, the proliferation of EMRs is exponential. Modern EMRs such as AccessEMR have built-in patient portals or other personal health record systems for patients to view their records whenever they wish.

When the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, officials across the globe initiated several protocols to help its citizens. Laws were set in place to reduce and control the spread, and monetary stipends were offered to those unable to work because of the disease. We’ve received a lot of questions from our loved ones like “What is a pandemic?”, “What is an epidemic?” and “What is the difference between the two?”

We’ve encountered both terms being used interchangeably, and—quite often—inaccurately. It is understandable why many often confuse these two words together, because they both contain the suffix, “-demic”. However, they vary greatly by the scale of infection. From their Greek roots, “-demic” is derived from “demos” meaning “people.” Therefore, when we hear “pandemic disease” or “epidemic disease,” we know that it is a disease affecting a distinct population.

What is an endemic?

Merriam-Webster defines an endemic as something “restricted or peculiar to a locality or region”. When we talk about diseases being endemic, that disease is native to, natural to, or confined to a place or a population of people. Take malaria, for example. Malaria is said to be endemic to tropical regions due to the region’s high, year-round temperature and heavy rainfall.

What is an epidemic?

The World Health Organization defines an epidemic as an “occurrence in a community or region of cases of an illness, specific health-related behaviour, or other health-related events clearly in excess of normal expectancy.” The prefix, “epi-” means “on, upon, near, at” in Greek. Therefore, an epidemic can be thought of as the start of a rapidly spreading disease that affects a community or region but is not quite as widespread as a pandemic. For example, a municipal government can declare an epidemic of measles within their city and close all public areas as a precautionary measure.

What is an outbreak?

The World Health Organization defines an outbreak as “the occurrence of disease cases in excess of normal expectancy. The number of cases varies according to the disease-causing agent, and the size and type of previous and existing exposure to the agent.” While outbreak and epidemic may seem similar, the former is a sudden eruption or occurrence of cases of any scale. It may affect a small, localized group of people, or impact millions across a continent. Let’s look at the example above regarding measles. Despite the declaration of an epidemic by the city, a localized outbreak may occur within a retirement home that was otherwise “measles-free.”

What is a pandemic?

If prefix “pan-” in “pandemic” means “all,” “of everything,” or “involving all members of a group,” then one can assume a pandemic disease is a disease that has spread across a region larger than an epidemic, possibly worldwide. The World Health Organization officially defines a pandemic as “an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people.”

COVID-19 was declared a pandemic primarily for its worldwide infection, but this declaration pushes national and global health agencies to respond to the situation with greater urgency, creating swift awareness of the measures to control it.

How is Access eHealth helping the cause?

Access eHealth Technologies is hard at work giving medical professionals working in long-term care facilities the tools they need to combat against the pandemic. Our solution comes in the form of software-as-a-service, AccessEMR, with the intent to ease the workload of long-term healthcare facilities—especially during COVID-19 where precautions are heightened to protect high-risk residents from potential exposure.
At Access eHealth Technologies, our goal of building a streamlined, effective, and cost-efficient medical software requires the input of our clients to be the best it possibly can. That is why Access eHealth is part of an ongoing initiative to gain insight into the problems that medical facilities face everyday. Part of this initiative is attending the Virtual Reverse Trade Show hosted by the University of Calgary that explores rapid solutions for COVID-19 in continuing care. We had the opportunity to listen to real-life issues that medical facilities face during the COVID-19 pandemic and how the industry can better prepare against future outbreaks. Thank you to the industry leaders that participated—we’ve collected some very helpful insight from the event. Infection Prevention and Control is the next topic in exploring the issues faced at the Virtual Reverse Trade Show.

What are some of the issues medical facilities face today?

COVID-19 has transformed our everyday lives, and with a rapidly changing environment, medical professionals within long-term care facilities are expected to pivot and adapt to the rules and best practices set out by the World Health Organization (WHO). During the rise of COVID-19, rule additions and modifications were observed on a weekly—or even daily—basis. These changes resulted in constant modifications to facility protocols, causing confusion of what rules were still in effect between care staff. One of the most received questions surround the protocol of medical face masks:

Donning and doffing

What areas of the facility are appropriate to wear or remove my face mask?

Wear Duration

What is the maximum duration for a care staff working in a long-term care environment to wear a face mask?

How long does it take for a medical face mask to become permeable to the coronavirus?

The effects of this confusion are further compounded when care staff are expected to disseminate information to concerned family members and residents alike. What are the protocols of visitors wearing a mask and how long should they wear their masks for?

These times of uncertainty elevate the level of stress for all parties. Regarding Infection Prevention and Control, we listened to medical professionals explain key issues during the pandemic and the solutions they were looking for.

Easy to Use.

During rapidly changing regulations and protocols, care staff do not have the luxury of developing deeply rooted habits and behaviours—especially during periods of high stress. Facilities require a solution which deliver a simple, intuitive user interface for care staff to pick up quickly and start using effectively.

Knowledge Retention and Reinforcement

As most adult learners may lose up to 80% of information given during first exposure, how do we reinforce infection prevention and control practices during times of high stress and uncertainty? Education must also be delivered in a rapid manner. This is especially true as researching bodies learn more about COVID-19’s method of transmission and chain of infection.

How can we address these problems?

AccessEMR includes a variety of features that make it simple for medical professionals to receive the most important information quickly.

Notification and News Board

Care staff can immediately locate critical information and pressing issues from the previous shift by looking at AccessEMR’s dashboard. For example, within Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement, care staff can find current resident infections or a report of the most recent incidents.

AccessEMR’s dashboard also includes a News Board where administrators, managers, and directors can disseminate critical information to their care staff, such as ongoing policy changes of family visits, donning and doffing face masks, or even the latest data on COVID-19’s methods of transmission. The Notifications board is also available for any staff members to post observations during their shift and notify the next shift of any concerns.

Flat UI Design

We understand that learning new tools can sometimes be difficult, especially in long-term care facilities where the work environment can be intense, stressful and complex. It needs to have an expedited learning process and be easy to use during day-to-day operations. That’s why AccessEMR was meticulously designed to have a clean user interface, removing unnecessary clutter and making it easy to integrate AccessEMR into your care staff’s workflow.

Quick Reference Guide

During high-stress environments, it can be difficult at times to recall information during a moment’s notice. AccessEMR offers a Quick Reference Guide for medical professionals to quickly refer to the properties of any given medication and their drug-to-drug interactions.

Want to learn more?

We hope that by building a robust system with a simple learning curve, outbreaks become easier to track and manage, staff occupational health and safety is improved, resident health and safety is safeguarded, and the heightened stress amongst staff and residents is alleviated.

Access eHealth Technologies is committed to providing a long-term care EMR solution tailored to your workflow. Book a demo with us today and learn more about how AccessEMR can help you and your facility.

At Access eHealth Technologies, our goal of building a streamlined, effective, and cost-efficient medical software requires the input of our clients to be the best it possibly can. That’s why Access eHealth is part of an ongoing initiative to gain insight into the problems that medical facilities face every day.

In this blog, we’ll be talking about one of the most widely requested topics from the Virtual Reverse Trade Show: Building a better platform for families to effectively communicate in a virtual setting.

What are some of the issues medical facilities face today?

In its current state, there is a disparate disconnect of communication between the facilities and families—especially within long-term care facilities. Families with elderly loved ones living in long-term care facilities have little to no information on what is being done for them in real-time. Families want to know that their loved ones are being cared for, but the only way is to call the medical facility and wait until there is an available nurse to address any questions. This process is time-consuming to both the medical staff and families, and the COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbates this problem. With policies in place to prevent the spread of infection to a high-risk population, many facilities have temporarily limited or banned family visits.

The type of information that families most commonly seek out include:

Meals

What kind of food is being served?

When are they being served?

Is there a loss of appetite?

Medication

What type of medication is being administered?

When is it being administered?

Have they been safely administered?

Hygiene

What does their shower schedule look like?

Activities

What activities are being scheduled to keep them engaged?

Those staying in long-term care facilities facing infection outbreaks, including COVID-19, are expected to stay inside their rooms until the infection is contained. Common rooms must then be cleaned and disinfected thoroughly before residents can re-enter those areas. This process can last weeks or months before the medical team can safely determine the infection has been contained. This prolonged isolation with little to no stimuli creates psychological and emotional stress for facility residents.

How can we address these problems?

Medical facilities need a solution to this problem. Thankfully, virtual conferences provide an excellent way to do so. Virtual conferences allow medical facilities to have one-on-one conversations or group calls with families or patients without exposing either party to the risk of infection. Our TeleHealth module provides these medical facilities with the necessary tools to perform these tasks with their residents and families. Additionally, families through our family portal are now able to view (in real-time) the care their loved ones receive such as meals, medication, hygiene, and enrolled recreational activities. The Telehealth module can also securely send and receive messages from the facilities and care providers.

While Telehealth is excellent at communicating updates to families on a real-time basis, its functionality extends far greater than this. Physiotherapists are now able to remotely schedule and organize individual and group calls for recreational activities and therapies. Families are then able to book and schedule activities independently and at their convenience for a week, month or year. From physiotherapy, emotional support or group therapy sessions, to the occasional BINGO game, families can see the level of physical tolerance required from the resident and determine what would be best for them.

Local resources also make it easy for residents to find important numbers in a quick and easy way. Phone numbers such as an emergency contact, taxi numbers for travel to and from their appointments, home, or recreational activities. These numbers can be easily customized by the facilities to make it simple and easy for their families and residents.

Best of all, these features can be easily accessed by the resident or family member via the family portal.

What makes our TeleHealth modules unique to other video conferencing solutions?

Like any Access eHealth Technologies software, you can trust AccessEMR to be safe and secure. While many video conferencing platforms have gained popularity in the past few months, many of these tools do not meet the minimum requires of privacy and security as laid out by HIA, PIPEDA, FHIR, HIPAA, ONC, and Canada Health Infoway privacy and security certification. AccessEMR is equipped with end-to-end encryption and meets or exceeds these Canadian and American medical and health information standards . In addition, these versions were not developed for healthcare and thus has no features specifically created to help treat patients online, nor was it designed to store patient data. Nurses and physiotherapists can retrieve specific health information straight from AccessEMR to determine if the resident is capable and tolerant to the physical strain of any activity.

In 1967, an English philosopher by the name of Phillipa Foot, devised a thought experiment in order to test human morality. What came from it was an ethical dilemma aptly named the Trolley Problem. Morals and ethics are a part of our everyday life and shapes nearly every decision we make—both small and large. Each both relate to what we consider “right” and “wrong”, but what is the difference between the two? Morals are principles that come from one’s own beliefs and values. It is the guiding star to how we personally feel in a given circumstance. On the other hand, ethics are guiding rules that come from an external source governing a person’s behavior or conduct.

Imagine a runaway trolley approaching a fork in the tracks. As a bystander, you notice that there is a junction that splits from the main line. On the main line, 5 people are tied to the track. The other has only one person tied to it. Beside you is a lever to divert the train. By pulling the lever, you save 5 lives but doom the life of one. On the other hand, by doing nothing, 5 lives are lost and 1 is saved.

Utilitarian schools of philosophy argue that by pulling the lever and sacrificing one person is the best course of action. However, Deontological ethics believe the very act of choosing to pull the lever is morally wrong. By pulling the lever, you have consciously decided to kill an individual.

More than 50 years later, the Trolley Problem continues to play an important and critical role in morals and ethics in several practices around the world—especially in science, military, and healthcare industries. Thankfully for the healthcare industry, there are tools in place to assist doctors in the difficult task of making split-second, moral decisions similar to the Trolley Problem today.

AccessEMR features checks and balances to protect against medical errors. For example, Prescription Screening support doctors in the decision-making process and help them identify and assess which patients need the most care. For example, if the physician would like to prescribe penicillin to a patient, the system screens the antibiotic, along with any other medication the patient is taking. If the system finds that there are adverse interactions between two drugs, the physician is then notified. In addition to drug-to-drug interactions, AccessEMR is also capable of advising the doctor of any drug allergies the patient may have.

However, while AccessEMR does offer these checks and balances to medical professionals, there may be rare occasions that the best option for the patient is for the physician to ignore these checks. Scenarios such as these are most common in palliative care. Palliative care patients are patients nearing the end of their life and primary care shifts to relieving pain, symptoms, and stress from the patient. Strong pain medications, such as morphine, are sometimes the only solution. Unfortunately, strong pain medication like morphine have strong side effects, leaving the physician with a difficult moral dilemma.

Is it morally right or wrong for a physician to administer pain at the expense of introducing other side effects, such as constipation? What level of pain is the patient currently experiencing? Although the patient may desire a specific procedure, it is ultimately up to the physician to think about whether or not that particular procedure will cause more harm than good for the patient.

What is your opinion on the Trolley Problem? Do you have a story of a loved one in a palliative state? We would love to hear your story and thoughts in the comments below. If you’re interested to learn more about AccessEMR and how it assists doctors in their workflow, you can contact us here.

Access eHealth Technologies takes your privacy seriously and adheres to rigorous privacy standards, policies and procedures to ensure your personal health information is only accessed by authorized users. Information is released to users that require it to perform treatment, payment, or other administrative purposes.

As a patient, you have the right to know how your personal health information in our software, AccessEMR, is safeguarded and shared. You have the right to view, obtain a copy of, and amend information in your health record. AccessEMR protects its users and data by incorporating the following components within our system security policies and procedures:

Authorization: AccessEMR’s access control include frequent password change requirements, single sign-on databases to assign users approved rights and privileges access to certain resources, and automatic account logoff after a specified amount of inactivity to mitigate the risk of invalid users gaining access to information. Under the Health Information Act (HIA) individuals have the right to access their individual health information and request personal health information. Through our patient portal, the patient or an authorized family member can be granted access to their medical records and can request changes if there are any disagreements or incorrect information. At any point, patients may provide or withdraw consent to access their personal health information at any time.

Authentication: Using login passwords and digital certificates, AccessEMR verifies the identity of a user.

Availability: AccessEMR will be available to medical facilities by providing access via online or offline databases to allow system administrators to isolate and defend against various threats in the event of an attack. We provide fault tolerances within our systems, such as redundant components, data archives, and networking systems.

Confidentiality: Information that is stored within AccessEMR remains confidential, protected, and can only be accessed by authorized users. This information can take on various forms such as identification data, diagnoses, treatments, progress notes, and laboratory results. Roles control the level of access to information for each user. For example, a nurse and receptionist require access to information they need to fulfill their responsibilities, but do not have access to the same information.

Data Integrity: Data integrity assures patient data is accurate and has not been manipulated by unauthorized users. As interoperable EMRs grow prominence across the continuum of care (hospitals, rehabilitation centres, long-term care homes, etc.), data integrity becomes increasingly important. Using intrusion detection and hashing methods, AccessEMR can verify information sent and received by another party has not been modified or altered.

Nonrepudiation: Nonrepudiation is the assurance that a transferred message has been sent and received by the parties claiming to have sent and received the message. This guarantees that the sender of a message cannot later deny having sent the message or that the recipient cannot deny having received the message. To enforce nonrepudiation, AccessEMR uses digital signatures. AccessEMR also offers system audit logs of all user activity. System audit logs include date and timestamps of entry, view duration, and a log of all modifications made to the patient’s record.

In addition to our security policies, AccessEMR is compliant with all Canadian and American health information standards including:

Personal Information Protection and Electronics Documents Act (PIPEDA): PIPEDA is a Canadian law that governs how organizations within the private sector can collect, use, and disclose personal information.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA): HIPPA’s Privacy Rule protects the privacy of individually identifiable health information, and the HIPAA Security rule sets national standards for the security of electronic protect health information (e-PHI).

Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR): FHIR is a standard published by Health Level 7 (please see below) for health care data exchange describing data formats, elements, and programming interfaces for electronic health records.

Office of the National Coordinator (ONC): Office of the National Coordinator is the principal federal entity charged with implementing health information technology and electronic exchange of health information in the United States.

Health Level 7 (HL7): An international organization that provides a comprehensive framework and standards for the retrieval, exchange, integration and sharing of electronic health information for clinical practice in management, delivery, and evaluation of health services.

Patient information protection is of our utmost importance and we take every precaution to ensure it is safeguarded and shared with only authorized parties, for the purposes of providing better quality of care for Canadians.
Alberta is setting a new standard for clinics, hospitals, cancer centres, mental health facilities, continuing care facilities, and other professional health care facilities across the province. Under the umbrella of Alberta Health Services, over 1,300 independent health information systems are currently being used to assist with the management of patient information. By finding a way to connect these systems via a centralized platform, the whole healthcare team—including patients—will have the best possible information throughout the care journey.

As it stands today, these health information systems are unable to provide a complete history of a patient’s health due to the inability to “speak” to one another. This causes patient information to be fragmented across the various facilities attended. For example, medical records at a hospital may be out-of-date compared to a frequently visited facility like a local walk-in clinic. The health information that one medical facility has could vary wildly from another.

This is why Connect Care is so important. Connect Care’s electronic health record system (EHR) connect these information systems together, creating a seamless network across Alberta.

This offers several advantages for healthcare professionals, the economy, and patients alike, including:

Allowing authorized healthcare professionals, patients, and loved ones seamless access to comprehensive and up-to-date patient information via desktop computers.

Support for transitions of care through a single patient record (e.g. a walk-in clinic transferring a patient’s health information to a specialist’s facility).

Transferring labs’ diagnostic imaging results via a patient’s electronic medical record.

Robust functionality of ordering and dispensing medication to patients and recording medication history.

Secure communications between care team members or care teams. Request advice or follow-up information on patients.

Access to analytic tools that chart a patient’s progress.

However, the most important aspect of Connect Care is its dramatically improved support for healthcare professionals. By bridging disparate health information systems together and closing the information gap, a comprehensive and complete picture of a patient’s health is gained. This allows medical professionals to deliver a greater degree of safe, high-quality care, leading to better health outcomes.

The implementation of Connect Care will be everywhere that AHS (or its partners) provide healthcare to, including:

Hospitals

Clinics

Continuing Care

Cancer centres

Mental health facilities

Community health sites run by AHS

Calgary Lab Services locations

And more

AccessEMR is excited to be a part of the collaboration of health information across Alberta. We’ve built our high-performance software from the ground up to adhere to all American and Canadian Health Information standards including, PIPEDA, FHIR, HIPAA, ONC, and HL7. This positions our software perfectly for North America’s imminent transition to integrated electronic-based medical information systems. If your medical facility is looking for an innovative, future ready EMR solution capable of securely exchanging patient data with EHRs in Canada and the United States, book a consultation with us today to learn how we can help.
